landscape materials

Landscape groundcover is a key part of any complete landscape design and landscape beds are the ideal way to showcase your groundcover. Landscape beds around the perimeter of your house provide an area for planting while also creating a barrier for the homes siding against the possibility of damage from a lawnmower or string trimmer. Aside from just around the home's perimeter, a landscape bed in the yard can also provide as a visually appealing way to break up long stretches of lawn, for example, along a property line. With a wide variety of material options, landscape groundcover can be a great way to add personality to your home.

mulch

Mulch is a landscape groundcover option that offers more of a natural, softer look to your landscape while also providing some key benefits to the landscape beds. Mulch assists in the preservation of soil moisture, improving the health and fertility of the soil for plantings in the beds. The finer, tighter texture of the mulch, spread in at least a 2" layer, can help suppress weed growth in the landscape beds while also protecting the underlying soil from the harshness of  Wisconsin's vast temperature changes. As the mulch naturally decomposes it releases vital nutrients and organic matter into the soil. Although there are many great benefits of natural decomposition, it does cause the need to repeat the mulching process every couple of years to maintain all of the full benefits that the mulch has to offer.

stone

Decorative stone is a landscape groundcover option that comes in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors to give a unique look to your home while providing a clean and polished overall appearance. The weight of the landscape stones provides optimal protection for the underlying soil from water erosion and is more likely to remain in place amongst activity from people and pets. The density of the stones can help to manage drainage but doesn't provide an adequate weed barrier by themselves alone. A necessary weed barrier fabric is laid before stones to prevent weed growth in the beds. The long-lasting nature of the landscape stones eliminates the need for replacement, however, care is required to prevent decomposing materials in the beds to accumulate on the weed barrier fabric.
